Interactive/Web Designer: Immediate + ongoing project work

8 hours 49 min ago
NOTE: We have an *immediate* opportunity -- a web-site launch we need brought to completion on tight timeline. We have working HTML/CSS3 templates, and Wordpress backend CMS already built. We need someone to implement the WordPress loop as well as some custom PHP coding. If interested and available, please contact us right away!

We also have regular ongoing project work. For the general description, read on.

We're a content and design studio founded by former frog design and Wired.com staffers, looking for experienced freelance interactive media/web designers to add to our team on a project basis. The right team member will be a senior-level designer who partners closely with us from project outset through implementation.

• You quickly grasp where we want to take a project, adding your own ideas to take the concept even further.
• You understand storytelling on the Web, including how to interpret print materials to the online medium.
• You're versed in the latest user interface and usability design.
• Your work is rooted in solid design and composition principles -- yet you think in terms of code and interactive possibilities (and limitations).
• You advocate accessibility and focus on compliance across all platforms, including mobile devices.
• You're able to work effectively with a creative director, yet you're adept at client-facing interactions as needed.
• You complete implementations on schedule and within budget.
• You catch client curve balls with creativity, skill, professionalism, and humor.
• (Bonus): You have a network of technical talent, who you could bring in to round out teams for more complex projects.

You understand the right tools and creative solutions for the job. You're able to articulate -- to us as well as to clients -- the benefits and tradeoffs of each.

Your toolkit may include some or all of the following:

• HTML5 / DHTML / XML
• CSS3
• PHP-based applications like WordPress and Drupal
• Basics such as Photoshop and Adobe Creative Suite
• Ajax / Flex
• JavaScript
• Video/multimedia implementation
• Database management
• Information architecture
• Flash (though we generally prefer HTML5 to Flash)
• E-commerce applications (such as Google Checkout and PayPal)
• (Bonus) Experience in Mobile platform application and interactive book design

Sound like you? Remotely like you? Please email your website/bio, portfolio, rate, and anything else you feel is pertinent.

We look forward to hearing from you!

We are backed by Angel investors and have developed our site which is now ready for a live beta test.

With Drupal, we have two goals: 1) to publish fresh content daily, across the network of thousands of websites; and 2) to refine/redesign the site in real-time, based on feedback from the beta test.

We are offering an internship for someone to assist with these two projects. You will gain direct experience in live web-publishing and in Drupal management and configuration.

-- a "natural" with technical / web projects
-- self-directed and self-organizing

-- Minimum commitment is three months
-- Most of your time should be in our loft offices in Emeryville (with 40 people from the last company I founded), but some can be virtual hours

Please submit a resume and cover letter.

This internship follows the six federal requirements for unpaid internships:
1. The internship must provide on-the-job training that is similar to what the intern would receive through their education,
2. The intern must benefit from the employment experience,
3. The intern must not be hired in replacement of a regular full- or part-time employee, and must be closely supervised by paid staff members,
4. The employer should receive "no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern,

CreativeMerch (www.creativemerch.com) is the reigning heavyweight champion in the company store platform octagon. We have a large and diverse user base. Our products host tens of thousands of websites and employ a wide range of technologies from dynamic image generation to large database design. Although we've been around for over a decade, we still maintain our startup energy and mentality. But not a startup's . . .frugalness. . . -- the benefit of having an actual product and user base.

Our office is in the historic Hobart Building, centrally located at Market & Montgomery, right on top of a BART station with epic views of Market Street, AT&T Park, and the surrounding Financial District.

Job Overview:

We're looking for either full or part time help. We are open to the idea of someone spending the rest of their life chained to a desk in our office, but also to someone who wants to work from home and take on other projects besides ours. We can either do this by hiring one indentured servant, or by spreading it out to a few different people as a team. Got friends?

You will be responsible for a mature code base that operates tens of thousands of mission critical B2B cloud-based websites, reporting to the company owner and working with a team of 3-4 front and back-end developers.

Technology Requirements:

• Programming: PHP

• Experience with open source MVC frameworks such as Symfony, Zend or Yii (or the skill set to roll your own). Or not.
• Solid working knowledge of scaling and caching using MVC frameworks
• Fluent in front-end technologies (CSS, XHTML/HTML) including JS frameworks like JQuery and JQuery UI

UX Design Interns (Paid) (dublin / pleasanton / livermore)

Fri, 01/27/2012 - 10:48
We are a boutique marketing consulting firm based in Pleasanton (near the West Dublin BART) with clients in the high tech and software space. We are looking for interns to work in our office (and frequently from home) in various projects: website design, software application user experience, product demos and so on. If you have a great portfolio (web design, Flash, workflow screens) and can create pixel-perfect HTML/CSS from your design files, we'd love to hear from you. These are paid internships with flexible work hours, and could lead to full-time opportunities for the right folks.

  • Compensation: TBD
  • Telecommuting is ok.
  • This is an internship job
  • OK to highlight this job opening for persons with disabilities
  • Principals only. Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster.
  • Please, no phone calls about this job!

Interface Designer Wanted for Website Facelift

Fri, 01/27/2012 - 09:30
We are looking for a redesign of our website (www.weddingrings.net). This is Phase 1 of a 2 Phase Redesign of our website. You can read all details and apply for this project here (http://www.weddingrings.net/interface-designer) and apply for this project.
This includes minor graphic changes and CSS changes. We do NOT want to have to recreate all of the images and CSS. We want to keep the overall structure of the site the same but bring a more contemporary look to the site in terms of colors and some element changes (i.e. font changes and moving around and/or deleting content).
We are also looking for your recommendations for changes on the home page that can make for a stronger user experience. There are 12 boxes below the top banner on the home page. As much as we believe that it's necessary to show shoppers a representative graphic for each type of wedding rings, we do not believe that taking up the entire main content area is a best use of this real-estate. We believe that other elements should be used in this main content area. For example, "Featured Products", "New Products", "Best Sellers", "On Sale", "Reasons to Shop Here", etc.

1. We want you to suggest common CSS changes and adjustments. This will switch the colors, fonts, etc. to a new "feel" site wide. This is the easiest method to update our site without moving code around and functionality. You can develop the ideas in Photoshop and our coder can implement the CSS changes.
2. We also want you to add some structure modifications and adjustments. We want you to analyze the UI and streamline common areas in closing the master template. For example the front page is very cluttered with text and ring images but doesn't promote actual rings, thus any ring purchase is down several levels down.
3. We are now considering relocating the left side product navigation to the top area. This is a Magento extension that we are considering (http://store.brandammo.co.uk/magento/pronav.html). This will allow us to list many more categories (and sub-categories) and show representative images when someone mouses over a category. This will allow us to completely remove the 12 boxes in the center content area of the home page.
4. Please send us a link to your user interface portfolio or send us at least 5 URLs for user interfaces you have designed for e-commerce sites.
5. Please also provide us with an idea of your rates (i.e. your hour fee).

Lastly, this is a freelance job and telecommuting is fine. We prefer a USA or Europe based designer.
This is the first of three user interface design jobs that we have to offer.

  • Compensation: To Be Negotiated
  • Telecommuting is ok.
  • This is a contract job.
  • Principals only. Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster.
  • Please, no phone calls about this job!
  • Please do not contact job poster about other services, products or commercial interests.
