We're a top tech non-profit (Seattle 2.0: "Best Non-Profit"; Fast Company: "5 Social Capitalists Who'll Change the World"; Economist: "a hotbed of innovation") on the way to becoming a top tech non-profit in the country.

You'll wear many hats while building new features for our public-facing website, improving the UI/UX of our website and internal tools, and helping to optimize our systems as we grow to scale.

REQUIRED:
• Demonstrated passion for the modern web
• Fluency in Ruby and Rails
• Front-end, back-end, or full-stack expertise
• Self-motivation and ability to thrive in an agile/iterative development environment

DESIRED:
• Git experience and GitHub account
• Familiarity with Unix-based systems
• HAML, SASS, jQuery, and CoffeeScript chops
• B.S. or B.A. in Computer Science, HCI or related discipline; however, we're more impressed by passion than degrees, GPAs, or years of experience.
• Work experience at a previous startup or personal side projects

HOW TO APPLY

CEO of a profitable software-as-a-service email company (Work Virtually from Home Office)

Tue, 01/17/2012 - 15:49

The Position: CEO of a profitable software-as-a-service email company

Are you a highly skilled techie and entrepreneur hungry to lead and grow a successful company? Think you've got what it takes to be a Steve Jobs, Larry Page, or Sergey Brin? If you're a developer with a successful entrepreneurial background paired with strategic vision and the ability to execute it, you might be exactly the person I need.

My name's Ajay. I'm the current CEO of JangoMail, and I'm looking for someone who can do this job better than I can. JangoMail is a web-based email marketing platform with over 4,000 customers worldwide. We've been in the email marketing business for almost 10 years, and have two services: JangoMail and JangoSMTP. The company is growing, profitable, and has a great future ahead of it with the right leadership. I've taken the company this far, and I think someone else can take the company further.

It's time for me, the founder of JangoMail, to find a Chief Executive Officer who will drive my company forward and steer its future success. As you can imagine, finding the right person is a tall order. I'm looking for someone with great vision, lots of energy, and fantastic leadership skills, a tech background and experience running a business, and a personality that matches my company's culture. Basically I want Mark Zuckerberg's clone. If you're that person, keep reading.

What I'm looking for:

The ideal candidate is similar to me in many ways but different - and better! - in others. A quick summary of the similarities: you need to have both an entrepreneurial and tech background, understand how to run a small business, and have a blazing desire to succeed. What I need from someone else is vision: you need to be the leader and driver of JangoMail's new phase, and have the foresight, energy, and passion to take the company to the next level of growth.

Here are some of the particular skills and experiences I'm looking for. You should:
1. Have run a software company in the past, preferably software-as-a-service (SaaS).
2. Have been a lead developer on a big software project at one point.
3. Have skills in most areas of running a small software company. This includes motivating and managing team members, recruiting and HR, accounting, online marketing like AdWords/SEO, negotiating, developing and maintaining strong client relationships, and so on.

Here are some less tangible requirements. You need to:
1. Be knowledgeable and passionate about all things software and tech.
2. Be able to conceive and execute a plan for how you'd take JangoMail forward.
3. Be liked by me and the other team members.

This position is a great opportunity for an energetic, driven techie who has skills beyond software development. If hired, you would inherit a profitable company with an amazing team and no big problems to start. If you have the skills and hunger of a great CEO and software developer, the strategic vision to fuel our product growth and our company growth, and the leadership skills to coordinate and guide a unique and highly independent team, this is the opportunity for you.

What your first three months might look like:
First 30 days: Immersion in product and company structure and culture.
You would spend your first month getting to know our products inside and out and learning the overall architecture and codebase that comprises the products. You would also get to know our two developers and our Director of Operations, and learn about the company's operations at a high level, from accounting functions to marketing functions.

Second 30 days: Growth plan and vision.
Working with input from me, you would spend your second month developing a plan for the future. This should be a flexible but comprehensive roadmap, identifying things like what people need to be hired, what new features should be implemented, and what partnerships we should pursue.

Third 30 days: Put the plan in action.
In the third month, I anticipate handing off control to you. You would begin implementing the plans that have been made so far. I would still provide some consultation and feedback, but this would mark the beginning of your tenure as top decision-maker.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: If you're looking for a new CEO, what role will you transition into?
A: I'm not sure yet, but I'll still have involvement in the company. I anticipate that I may stay around in a technical capacity, developing and improving the product, or I might focus on blogging for the company or establishing partnerships. Whatever my role turns out to be, it will be up to you to steer and grow the company.

Q: What will the compensation structure look like?
A: This position will be highly compensated, with a six figure base salary plus a percentage of profits.

Q: Where will the CEO work?
A: From home. We are a virtual company with a small office in Dayton, Ohio. I (the current CEO) live in Chicago, but you can live wherever you want.

Q: If the CEO is remote, how will he/she work with his team?
A: Using remote communication technologies like phone, email, video chat, and IM. Our team is made up of highly motivated and highly independent individuals; it's very important that you're able to coordinate and manage a team like this.

Think you're the one? To apply, email your application to CEO-search at us.jangomail.com (Replace at with an @ sign.) Send your cover letter in the body of the email message, and attach your resume in .rtf format (Rich Text Format). I love detail - the more detail you convey about yourself in your cover letter, the better! I want to know more than just your employment history; I want to get a feel for who you are as a person and what kind of executive you'd be for my company. I also invite you to submit anything you think represents who you are and why you're the CEO I need. That might be a code sample, a list of URLs, design work, an essay describing your leadership style and history, and so on. If you consider it important and valuable to my decision, I encourage you to include it in your application.

Seattle Start-Up Seeks Geek (Seattle Area)

Mon, 01/09/2012 - 19:37
We are a Seattle start-up actively recruiting an up-and-coming rock-star developer. This is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor (OK, maybe second floor) of a budding company with a great idea that is ready to take on the world.

So who are we?
We are the BSFG Travel & Entertainment Network, a growing start-up started in 2010. We aim to innovate and thrive in the immature online deal industry. Our network offers exclusive travel and entertainment deals designed around specific demographics. Our flagship site, BabyShowerForGuys.com (launched November 2011), is creating a brand new holiday to celebrate fatherhood. Our exclusive deals are brokered with dad and his buddies in mind. Male-centric entertainment and travel deals will soon be promoted and sold through our weekly e-communications and on our website. Check out some of the buzz from 2011 here.

We have grown from two to five employees in the last year. Each member of the team has about 10 years of experience and is hungry to build a thriving company. We want to recruit individuals with roughly the same amount of experience and drive.

What is the job?
Job responsibilities include coding, developing of user interfaces, writing back-end code and creating databases. Also, develop for our .NET CMS, KooBoo. But the right candidate should also have the ability to serve as the jack-of-all-trades "geek." They will manage everything from databases to the e-mail system. The ideal recruit will work with our IT consultant to create and execute the company's overall technical plan.

We are a friends/family funded company on the fringe of seeing steady revenue. So, while this can be a full-time gig at times, you should have a steady income to live on, but enough time and passion to commit to the company "after hours". This is an opportunity to work for company equity, only having to invest your time.

What are we looking for?
- B.S. in Computer Science or similar
- Five to ten years proficiency with ASP.NET, JavaScript, AJAX, CSS, HTML
- .NET CMS experience is a huge plus (including KooBoo)
- Knowledge and understanding of full life cycle development
- Excellent communication skills, as well as strong problem solving abilities and an aptitude for learning new technologies
- Ability to collaborate and work within a start-up team, as well as operate independently
- Self-motivated, creative and strong sense of accountability
- Someone with a steady gig to pay the bills, but the passion and time to work hard on a rewarding project

So ask yourself:
- Are you tired of making others rich, working for "the man?"
- Are you interested in working on the side for equity while building a company that YOU OWN?
- Do you want to get involved in the Seattle start-up community?
- Are you sick of red tape, and yearn for a job that allows you to guide the technical philosophy of a company?
- Do you enjoy working with equally committed and passionate individuals?

Please reply with your resume and tell us why you think we should consider you for the position. We look forward to hearing from you!

Telecommute from any US City- UX Developer - Ajax / NodeJs (Any US City)

Tue, 12/27/2011 - 16:53
Wanted -- full-time JavaScript/Ajax superstar with insane UX programming chops.

Intelligence, teamwork, and communication skills will be required. We're looking to make a long-term addition to our team. Work hours are long but flexible. This is a work from home (telecommute) position. We don't care where you live, but you will have to work on roughly US Mountain or Central time and you have to speak flawless (ideally native) English that can be perfectly understood over the phone.

Starting salary is $70k per year + benefits.

The Ideal applicant...

- is a master of jQuery
- knows exactly what a callback is and why try/catch doesn't help with asynchronous errors
- can confidently explain javascript's variable scoping rules including forward function references
- has written some server-side software using Node.js
- knows why you have to use jslint (or something similar)
- can impress us with beautiful HTML and CSS (beautiful code AND beautiful pixels)
- can show us examples of their programming kung-fu
- is a great communicator and not afraid to pick up the phone or write an email

About Us:

- This is a full-time actual job--not a scam, "opportunity", or temp agency contract.
- We're well-funded and experienced software company. We're NOT a recruiter or a temp agency.
- The tech team is small, and we have been working together for many years. Each member's contributions are very important.
- All of our programmers telecommute. You won't have to worry about a dress code, but you will have to be exceptionally responsive.
- We do a lot of our planning and communication over Skype, Email, and IM.
- We are writing all of our new software with Node.js. Most of it will be backed with CouchDB.
- Our software is all written web-application style. So all the back ends are HTTP and all the front ends are HTML/Ajax.

About the Job:

We are building a ton of new software. You will be responsible for making that software usable by humans. In some cases, this will mean tossing out a lot of hard work and building something better based on user feedback. In other cases, this will mean pushing back on other developers or working out a better API with them. In all cases, it will mean fastidious attention to detail and aesthetic. Some of our developers work strange hours, and our web-apps have customers using the 24/7. So from time to time we may expect you be available for discussions or emergencies outside of "normal" business hours.

The job will be challenging. You will have to be bright, optimistic, and able to match wits with other smart (opinionated) people. You will have the chance to do something new and do it well. After all the hard work we put into making applications and infrastructure that can handle millions of clicks and work as intended, our customers and investors still usually judge it by how it looks--so your creativity, talents, and passion will be noticed, respected, and genuinely appreciated.

Young Web/Graphic Designer and Programming Phenom Wanted (Seattle)

Tue, 12/27/2011 - 01:03
Requirements:
1. Exceptional web and graphic designer
2. Phenomenal web programmer
3. In college or recent grad (within a few years)
4. Entrepreneurial
5. Avid Redditor

Please only apply if you fit all of these qualifications, if you don't, hit back now because you're not the person I'm looking for. Thanks for your interest though.

Now, for the likely very small handful of individuals who do qualify, please read on.

I'm a local young, motivated entrepreneur who needs a business partner with a skill-set I do not possess.

I recently came up with my million dollar idea and I need your help to bring this to fruition. Its a relatively simple idea that could be put together in under a month, would be positioned as the first-of-its-kind, revolutionary service that would dominate the current flooded and value-lacking status quo services in the industry, it has a low startup cost and can begin generating revenue within a couple months of launch. A detailed business plan has been put together to corroborate all this and add further insight.

All I can say is it has to do with the rapidly expanding mobile app industry (which I have experience in) but we're getting in on the much more wide-open and profitable service side of things.

Here are additional preferred qualifications that will give you a leg up on other applicants:
6. Internet engineering skills/experience
7. Love of mobile apps
8. Trustworthy, dependable and loyal

Please send me an email with 'Applicant' in the subject line and follow the following format:
- Tell me a little about yourself
- List out numbers 1 through 8 and explain your qualifications for each point as they correspond to 1 through 8 on this post
- Tell me what interests you most about this opportunity and what would make you a good business partner/why I should choose you.
- Attach samples of your web and graphic design pieces or direct me to your website

I expect this email to be rather long but please try to be as concise as possible.

You're young, living in one of the largest tech centers of the country and you want to use your skills to impact the world. Why not try a startup? Now is as good of a time as any.

Thank you for your time, I'm looking forward to finding the partner who will help me revolutionize the mobile app industry.
