Startup Accelerator seeking Full-Stack Software Engineer (Culver City)

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 13:30

We are a team of five based in NYC and Los Angeles who are redefining the way that companies get started. We work with companies who are just starting to develop products, launch, recruit, and raise money. As a part of our relationships, we are granted founder's stock (usually from 2-10%) to align our interests.

Over the next year, our goal is to bring 30 companies through our accelerator, collectively raising over $50M. We can do it, but we need your help.

After working on nearly 50 projects in 2011, we have a nearly-perfected system for taking ideas to MVP-status. We are building software that codifies this workflow and helps the companies we work with (and even those we don't work with) capitalize on the systems we've developed.

We've scaled web applications to millions of users within days, raised money for companies we've founded, and bootstrapped ourselves from day one. We are programmers, product developers, designers, and UX experts.

Requirements
  1. You're an animal.
  2. You create more than you consume.
  3. You are curious, hard-working, easy to talk to, and organized.
  4. You are proficient on the command line (e.g., ssh, bash, curl, piping, etc.).
  5. You have experience with at least a couple types of programming languages (statically-typed, dynamic, interpreted, compiled, etc.).
  6. You have built, tested, and deployed web applications from scratch.
  7. Not required, but you have or soon will have a degree in Computer Science or related technical field.
Responsibilities
  1. You will work on multiple projects at the same time.
  2. You will write code in Python, SCSS, Javascript, and HTML.
  3. You will turn designs into fully-functioning web applications.
  4. You will research new tools and technologies to accelerate development.
  5. You will improve our internal toolchain (management, deployment, and testing).
  6. You will be responsible for architecting and building features in their entirety.
  7. Become better, faster, stronger.
To apply, send us an email with your name, resume, projects, and anything else that will help us understand the type of developer you are.

Salary depends on experience. If you stick around and you impress us, expect to get stock.

Web Developers Wanted (Southern California)

Mon, 01/30/2012 - 21:11
I am putting together a Southern California based team to build a web application (and iOS & Android apps) to connect renters to landlords. We will be going head-to-head with Westside Rentals.

Nothing permanent has been built yet. You will be getting in on the ground floor.

We are looking for people to work part time, as part of a team, to focus on the parts you want to focus on:
- Interested in working on an iOS App? Fine with us.
- Want to learn to use API's to check credit and process rent payments? You can do that.
- Want to the site look good? We need you.
- Android fanboy/girl who loves C? FantastiC.
- You like javascript but hate databases? Good. Someone else loves databases, but hates javascript.
- Think Twilio is awesome and want to try it out? Let us know.

You will not be dictated to by MBAs. Your opinion will be valued. Decisions will be made by the development team.

Excellent idea, but how will we make money?
I'm glad you asked!

1. Advertising to the tenants.
Sending them a discount code to sign up for cable internet / TV / phone service. (I've had experience with this in the past.)
Movers. Self Storage. Furniture stores. Electronics stores. Insurance (through a partnership with a company like Leaky.com)

2. The information
Customers will get their credit checked through the site and use the site to pay their rent. Landlords will be able to leave feedback on tenants. The site will have information on who is a good tenant, which is valuable to landlords.

The site will also have information on how credit scores and rental prices are changing in different areas. This is very valuable to real estate investors who spend millions on properties. I looked at some property reports which cost $2,500 - they were not what I was expecting. If we had lots of people using the site, we could easily generate reports like that, which could be sold to people who want to evaluate the value of a property.

3. Local Deals
The period immediately after people move is the time when their patterns of behavior in the new area are set.
Special deals for customers who live equidistant from competing businesses will have a much better return, when offered to customers who recently moved to the area. (I'll explain more in person).

For example: Ralphs does not want to offer $20 for $10 on Groupon, because the customers who buy the deal are unlikely to return to Ralphs. But Ralphs is willing to pay us to distribute: "$10 off $20-or-more in groceries" coupons, if the coupons only go to people who recently moved to a new area.

If you want to know the top-secret other ways we plan on earning money, you're gonna have to sign an NDA. Just kidding. Those are too hard to enforce, so you'll have to join the team.

Due to my experience in a similar industry (my 9 to 5 is as an actuary, pricing home insurance), I believe that I have a better idea of how to design a system that renters and landlords will use.

I have existing relationships to landlords, who own over 100,000 apartments in Los Angeles.
These landlords will help with development by:
- telling us which features they want
- giving us constant feedback while the site is being developed on what they like / don't like. What is easy to use and what isn't.
- using the product and advertising that they use it, which will help gain marketshare

I'm putting together a team to make it happen. You will be able to work remotely.
We're flexible with how you want to be compensated: Hourly rate? Stock? Combination of stock and pay?
If you're a good web developer, we'll try work something out something that everyone will be happy with.

I'm open to all languages, but am learning towards either Ruby on Rails or PHP.

Personally, I have experience with PHP, Ruby, Python, C, C++.
(At work, I write programs using Cobol and massive SQL queries. I do statistical analysis with SAS.)

Please take a look at the sites above, as well as RedFin.com, to get an idea of what I'm thinking about.

Please email me to get more information or for my contact info.

Thanks,
Adam

programming scripts for thinkorswim stockmarket (anywhere)

Tue, 12/27/2011 - 15:54
TD Ameritrade's thinkorswim lets users click on stock price charts to graphically create regression lines. I want a script or other code that will

1. automate this for a list of about 500 stocks. Example: compute 3 regression lines for stock XYZ for the period: now minus 5 days, now minus 10 days, and now minus 50 days. The user (me) will enter the tickers of the stocks desired and be able to revise the list. The program must then enter the results in my Excel spreadsheet. By logging onto ameritrade.com and thinkorswim and running the program, the slopes of 3 regression lines for each stock will be entered into the spreadsheet.

2. also extract approx 15 data (such as projected earnings for next year) for each stock from Ameritrade's stock pages and enter those into the appropriate fields in my spreadsheet. So all regression lines and and all selected stock data would be updated at once, at the user's command.

3. The entire update should complete within 10 or 20 minutes on a broadband connection.

4. After 12 months, you can sell this software to others if you want.

  • Location: anywhere
  • Compensation: I will pay $5000.00 for such newly-written script or program.
  • Telecommuting is ok.
  • This is a contract job.
