Austin Consumer Internet Startup Hiring Front-End Dev. (FT/contractor) (downtown (cool old historic bldg))
You are someone who. . .
- is passionate about development,
- has an entrepreneurial streak and
- wants to solve meaningful problems with great software.
We are Food on the Table (http://foodonthetable.com/) & we solve real problems that make a difference in peoples day-to-day lives. As an Austin-based consumer internet startup, we help people to simplify their lives by simplifying the work around meal planning, shopping & cooking. Through our iOS and Android apps plus our website, we have built a service that touches thousand of people each day, bringing them live data about sale items in their specific grocery stores combined with recipes and meal planning personalization.
Our front-end needs are primarily in the browser, secondarily on top of Titanium, i.e. we have two technical stacks
- From the browser, we use use HTML, CSS, Javascript, Ruby, Rails, MySQL, Redis, AWS
- From mobile, our iOS and Android apps are based on Titanium (using Javascript) combined with our shared backend service (Rails, MySQL, Redis, AWS)
We develop in a way you've probably never seen -- ferociously applying lean startup principles, this means (among other things) we are constantly running multiple experiments to learn what changes really make a difference to our users (typically 10 experiments running at any time) & individual developers deploy to production multiple times / day, release Android multiple times / week & release iOS weekly. We are ferociously lean (as in lean startup) & as a result -- everything we do goes straight back to how we are making a measurable difference to our users.
Learn more about how lean startup is applied within Food on the Table from the recent book The Lean Startup by Eric Ries (pages 99 -- 102) (http://www.amazon.com/Lean-Startup-Entrepreneurs-Continuous-Innovation/dp/0307887898/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325271029&sr=8-1), from our CEO Manual Rosso's talk at Startup Lessons Learned (http://www.justin.tv/startuplessonslearned/b/262671499), or some patterns of lean startup at Food on the Table by Steve Sanderson (http://stevesanderson.com/some-patterns-of-lean-startup-from-food-on-the-table/).

CEO of a profitable software-as-a-service email company (Work Virtually from Home Office)
The Position: CEO of a profitable software-as-a-service email company
Are you a highly skilled techie and entrepreneur hungry to lead and grow a successful company? Think you've got what it takes to be a Steve Jobs, Larry Page, or Sergey Brin? If you're a developer with a successful entrepreneurial background paired with strategic vision and the ability to execute it, you might be exactly the person I need.
My name's Ajay. I'm the current CEO of JangoMail, and I'm looking for someone who can do this job better than I can. JangoMail is a web-based email marketing platform with over 4,000 customers worldwide. We've been in the email marketing business for almost 10 years, and have two services: JangoMail and JangoSMTP. The company is growing, profitable, and has a great future ahead of it with the right leadership. I've taken the company this far, and I think someone else can take the company further.
It's time for me, the founder of JangoMail, to find a Chief Executive Officer who will drive my company forward and steer its future success. As you can imagine, finding the right person is a tall order. I'm looking for someone with great vision, lots of energy, and fantastic leadership skills, a tech background and experience running a business, and a personality that matches my company's culture. Basically I want Mark Zuckerberg's clone. If you're that person, keep reading.
What I'm looking for:
The ideal candidate is similar to me in many ways but different - and better! - in others. A quick summary of the similarities: you need to have both an entrepreneurial and tech background, understand how to run a small business, and have a blazing desire to succeed. What I need from someone else is vision: you need to be the leader and driver of JangoMail's new phase, and have the foresight, energy, and passion to take the company to the next level of growth.
Here are some of the particular skills and experiences I'm looking
for. You should:
1. Have run a software company in the past, preferably software-as-a-service (SaaS).
2. Have been a lead developer on a big software project at one point.
3. Have skills in most areas of running a small software company. This includes motivating
and managing team members, recruiting and HR, accounting, online marketing like AdWords/SEO,
negotiating, developing and maintaining strong client relationships, and so on.
Here are some less tangible requirements. You need to:
1. Be knowledgeable and passionate about all things software and tech.
2. Be able to conceive and execute a plan for how you'd take JangoMail forward.
3. Be liked by me and the other team members.
This position is a great opportunity for an energetic, driven techie who has skills beyond software development. If hired, you would inherit a profitable company with an amazing team and no big problems to start. If you have the skills and hunger of a great CEO and software developer, the strategic vision to fuel our product growth and our company growth, and the leadership skills to coordinate and guide a unique and highly independent team, this is the opportunity for you.
What your first three months might look like:
First 30 days: Immersion in product and company structure and culture.
You would spend your first month getting to know our products inside and out and learning the
overall architecture and codebase that comprises the products. You would also get to know our
two developers and our Director of Operations, and learn about the company's operations at a
high level, from accounting functions to marketing functions.
Second 30 days: Growth plan and vision.
Working with input from me, you would spend your second month developing a plan for the future.
This should be a flexible but comprehensive roadmap, identifying things like what people
need to be hired, what new features should be implemented, and what partnerships we should pursue.
Third 30 days: Put the plan in action.
In the third month, I anticipate handing off control to you. You would begin
implementing the plans that have been made so far. I would still provide some
consultation and feedback, but this would mark the beginning of your
tenure as top decision-maker.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: If you're looking for a new CEO, what role will you transition into?A: I'm not sure yet, but I'll still have involvement in the company. I anticipate that I may stay around in a technical capacity, developing and improving the product, or I might focus on blogging for the company or establishing partnerships. Whatever my role turns out to be, it will be up to you to steer and grow the company.
Q: What will the compensation structure look like?
A: This position will be highly compensated, with a six figure base salary plus a percentage of profits.
Q: Where will the CEO work?
A: From home. We are a virtual company with a small office in Dayton, Ohio. I (the current CEO) live in Chicago, but you can live wherever you want.
Q: If the CEO is remote, how will he/she work with his team?
A: Using remote communication technologies like phone, email, video chat, and IM. Our team is made up of highly motivated and highly independent individuals; it's very important that you're able to coordinate and manage a team like this.
Think you're the one? To apply, email your application to CEO-search at us.jangomail.com (Replace at with an @ sign.) Send your cover letter in the body of the email message, and attach your resume in .rtf format (Rich Text Format). I love detail - the more detail you convey about yourself in your cover letter, the better! I want to know more than just your employment history; I want to get a feel for who you are as a person and what kind of executive you'd be for my company. I also invite you to submit anything you think represents who you are and why you're the CEO I need. That might be a code sample, a list of URLs, design work, an essay describing your leadership style and history, and so on. If you consider it important and valuable to my decision, I encourage you to include it in your application.

Edgy web designer needed for full time position
This is for ongoing enhancement and maintenance of an adult entertainment website and related creatives. It's not porn, but if your beliefs preclude you from seeing the occasional sexy image this probably isn't the position for you.
Because of our content, we're looking for someone with a bit of an edge to their designs. We're willing to take some risks to present a look that isn't your average site. We want your opinions and design skill to contribute to that.
Your initial task will be to take the existing look and feel as created by our current designer, enhance it, and finish off the site. Your ideas on how to improve what has already been done are welcome.
Once that's complete you'll be in charge of creatives for the company. Everything from styling new features on the site, to creating banner ads, landing pages, email campaigns, etc.
This is a permanent ongoing position, we can either put you on long term contract or we can employ you full time - your choice. We are not looking for agencies or a part time contract position - if you can't devote 100% of your time to our project (and be well compensated for it) then this is not the job for you. If everything works out and you wish to be employed as a salaried company employee (vs contract) we'll provide you with a full benefits package, pay increases based on quarterly reviews, paid vacation time and access to our 401k retirement plan 120 days after your initial employment.
We are willing to entertain hiring someone outside the local area, but you must have great design skills, superb English skills, and have a proven ability to be productive off-site.
Compensation will be based on your skill level, and we're willing to pay up to $1,400 a week ($72,800 a year) for the right person. We'd rather spend a few extra dollars on a great designer and get top talent for this position.
To apply, please send me your portfolio and available start date.
Good luck!
