Designer needed for new web property
We are a small company working to disrupt the small-business insurance market.
We have over a decade of experience as consultants and are working to expand.
We're building a new website with a small team of developers and we really
need someone with solid UX and UI design to help us out. For money: no spec
work here.
As mentioned, we have a small development team working right now, so our needs
are fluid. We have core requirements that are good enough to get you the job,
but we have additional requirements that mean that you'll be useful for longer
and so that we'll have more long-term, as opposed to occasional contract work
for you, if you qualify.
Core requirements (Absolutely essential! Everything else is just icing): Be a
designer.
- Photoshop or equivalent. We need a designer who can make beautiful
things.
We're targeting small businesses so we don't want to go crazy, but we
also want this to be something to be proud of. Metaphorically we're
thinking Apple with Impact, not Google with Helvetica.
- UI and UX opinions. Have you at least heard of Fitt's law? Do you do
mobile-first design? We don't care what your opinions are as long as you
have them and can argue for them.
We want you to know more about this stuff than us, because we don't.
- Good communication skills. As just mentioned, we want people with
opinions, if you have opinions but can't express them then, well,
unfortunately to us it's as though you don't have them.
When was the last time you told a co-worker "look, if you don't
understand it's not my job to teach you"? If the answer isn't "never"
we *probably* won't get along. (Unless they were a real jerk. It
happens.)
Extra-nice (We could use someone like this on the team): Web front-end
- Strong HTML/CSS: Can you make your designs come to life in a
browser? Do you use semantic markup? Can you use a templating system
to reduce html duplication?
Do you have opinions on html/css frameworks? What's your favorite new
tech introduced in Browser wars II?
Ridiculously nice: Developer, front or back end (or both!)
- Front End: do you know JS? We use jQuery and a couple other things
(E.g.: We've got a fork going trying out Backbone integration.)
- Back End: do you know PHP and SQL? We've got an in-house MVC framework
that is simple and works. Like all roll-your-own production code it's
not the prettiest thing out there, but it works and doesn't introduce
very much overhead. We've got enough code hygiene that it's fine. Do you
clean your source regularly?
Nice to haves that don't really correlate to positions:
- VCS: if you want to hack on actual code with us you need to use git.
We don't care if you've never used it before, we're willing to teach,
just don't be unwilling to learn.
- marketing/seo experience: we've got ideas and etc, but we're a
business. Smart people welcome.
If this sounds like you, please send us an email with a portfolio, maybe a
resume, and preferably a link to work that you've done. It doesn't need to be
professional work, but if you've got something that you're proud of that is
real (links to contributions to open source are definitely encouraged--whether
it be design mockups for Moodle or participation in a bikeshed discussion on
reddit or some listserv somewhere or actual code contributions.)
Thanks, and looking forward to hearing from you.

Who We Are
We are Hot Topic Media: a completely virtual, cutting edge marketing company. We create high value information products and market them online.
Our mission is to help people improve their lives by connecting them with expert advice. Our brands include "Have The Relationship You Want", "Double Your Dating", "Get Altitude", "Guru Mastermind" and "Catch Him And Keep Him".
That's what we do. But who we are is what drives our success:
We Are Innovative
Everything about us, from how we work, to where we work, and what we sell is breaking business rules. Our entire team works from home; there isn't an office to speak of. Our products range from $20 to $10,000, and 95% of them are delivered digitally.
We Are Results Oriented
We measure everything. No decision is made without testing and data. People are evaluated, promoted and rewarded based on their results, not politics or hierarchy.
We Are Far Reaching
We've sold above $100 million dollars worth of information products in over 100 countries. We've helped over 20 million people with their personal and professional lives, and have close partnerships with leading brands like eharmony, AskMen and Facebook.
We Are Grown-Ups
We aren't in the business of baby-sitting.
No one watches your desk when you have a doctors' appointment.
No one tells you not to sleep 20 extra min if you had a bad night.
No one minds if you pick your kids up from school.
We can tell you are doing your job because you are driving results. Period.
We Are Intense
Flexible? Yes. High Pressure? Sometimes. High performance? Always. We are serious about results, and excited to make an impact.
We Are Supportive
Despite our virtual culture, we have a personal touch. We may not have after office happy hours, but we have a real team mentality, supporting each other's personal and professional goals.
We can tell you are doing your job because you are driving results. Period.
Who We Are Looking For
You Design Experience, Not Images
You can get into the mind of a customer and their motivations, and understand how your design will affect them. You can craft compelling visual experiences that maximise the experience and ultimately drive sales.
You Are Dirty
There are no pristine hands here. Roll up your sleeves; prepare to own it. Some days, you'll get so dirty you'll need two showers.
(p.s. But since we are 100% virtual, showers aren't mandatory)
You Are Not A Solo Artist
Team players only. You collaborate well with others. You are someone people want to work with and will work hard for.
You Are A Sure Bet
You have measurable results to back up your design experience. Your references all want to rehire you. You are a designer with proven results, and a high quality person.
You Are DaVinci-esque
Your skills traverse creative inspiration and technical mastery. Each element you put on the page is high impact and deliberate.
You Are An Explorer
You survey the Internet for great design ideas and innovations, and know how to use those ideas to benefit our business.
Ready To Come Help Us Solve Our Problems?
If this sounds like you, and you want to work in our creative, hard-working, collaborative environment, respond with your resume, cover letter and salary requirements.
Compensation is competitive based on experience and performance.

Soho Tech Start-up hiring Marketing-SEO/Sales/Bus. Dev interns. (SoHo)
Our company is an IT Infrastructure Hosting company based in Soho - NYC. The company was founded in 2009 and operated by a young crop of New Yorkers with strong entrepreneurial spirit and drive. Looking for someone to develop and create our companies marketing and sales campaign. Passion for the tech scene, marketing and sales and business growth is more important than having hard skills. ( We can teach you later.)
That's what we are here to develop. A knack for sound strategy, initiative, and results (whether unsuccessful or successful) is embraced. We like risk, and so should you. You will have freedom to pursue your own initiatives that you think the company can benefit from.
Students: We will work with your school for this summer internship to be accredited.
Qualifications: This isn't something you need concrete prior experience (This is why there are internships.) Our only requirement is that we work with someone who has the passion to learn, initiate strategies and follow through with strong effort. AN understanding of the tech industry works.
The company is in a post startup phase in a community oriented Soho office. It's inspiring for entrepreneurs. 3 day work weeks - summer-time project (college credit is available). Fun stuff, we'll work hand in hand on these projects with clearly defined benchmarks for success. SEO, Google Analytics, creating, developing and executing experimental marketing campaigns is what you will be involved in. Some of your initiatives may fail, and some will succeed. We embrace both, everything is a learning experience.
Projects: The internship will be a combination of the following, depending on your interest.
Marketing
- Build on our (lackluster) online presence, marketing and Search Engine Optimization.
- Propose and execute strategies to drive website viewership and conversion rates.
- Research advertising channels and make the case for investment.
- Promote industry exposure and other marketing methods.
- Build our companies web presence and solidify our brand.
Sales Campaigns & Business Development
- Develop promotion offers for the appropriate market segment. Research and address the market needs and propose how to reach and encourage our service as their solution through tailor made special offers.
- Learn about our assets and competency, and think creatively of new product and service offerings that are within our capability.
- Build affiliate programs and channel partner relationships. Structure proper compensation incentives, research and propose what drives resellers of our service and develop material to help them sell our services.
Summary of the Company:
We host IT infrastructure for small and large companies alike. We call this Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS). We provide a cost effective way for companies ranging from tech start-ups to large enterprises to utilize our IT infrastructure and data center services to avoid heavy upfront investment to try their product or outsource their IT infrastructure to a more reliable, compliant, and intuitive service. It's our job to attract them to this solution.
Why do companies need this service? Companies have become so heavily dependent on a functioning, powered and online network in its day to day operations, which any down-time would cost the company substantially in productivity and revenue. Our services include cloud computing, colocation and managed dedicated & virtual server hosting to major companies for a monthly fee. We offer tech startups, large enterprises the peace of mind to know that business will continue as usual. 24/7/365, in a scalable and cost-effective manner. We strive for cost-effectiveness to get businesses off the ground and for business to continue without interruption.
Because we have the IT infrastructure available to us in a top notch facility, there are so many other high tech sources of revenue to consider, and it our hope that working together we can explore, research and come to a logical strategy with executable actions that demonstrate an immediate impact on the direction of the company. You have the liberty to pursue these new projects.
You would be working in our Start up. youthful, community oriented corporate Soho office furthering business development and sound marketing campaigns with us. Your responsibility would be to research and justify these campaigns, and execute them and learn from the results.
Draft a cover letter, make it as simple asa pie, don't go overboard. . Just send what you have. We value personal chemistry, drive and passion. We are of the mindset that a discussion (via phone call or in person) goes a long way than a boiler plate or overly perfected resume (we've all been there.) E-mail us and we'll schedule a quick, casual call. We are in Soho, shoot an e-mail and stop by if you would like. We'd like to wrap this up by end of week.
COMPENSATION
For interns, we'll cover commute fees (monthly metrocard), food, etc. Ifyou are promoted to a base, then we will decide there what your compensation should be.
We're looking forward to hearing from you.
You can call Tim at 203 two-four-nine-3 four One Three
Thanks.
